Friends for Decades

A longtime friend of mine showed up in El Salvador this week. Bill and I met in the early 2000’s at the University of Miami. We went to Costa Rica for about a month with our other friend, Alex, and drove all over that beautiful place. The Surfer’s Guide to Costa Rica and a handful of back-of-the-napkin kind of tips. Gas station maps.

About 10 years later, we rented a fort of a house together on a beach in Nicaragua. There were about 12 of us for nine days living in the lap of surf luxury. Alex was there, too. (guy never misses a surf trip) Prepared meals. Stocked fridge. Clean sheets and towels, daily.

Fast forward to April 2026, and Bill is sitting on my couch in El Salvador as I write this email intro to you. He’s here on vacation with his family. Staying in a nice place on the other side of the river, wife and kids enjoying the pool and cliffside view. To quote his WhatsApp message, “…and even not seeing eachother in that long felt like it was yesterday! Wild how that works.”

Surfing is amazing, huh? Friends for decades.
